Centre d'Innovació Tecnològica en Convertidors Estàtics i Accionaments (CITCEA) and Biyiud collaborate in the development of an innovative model to improve the flexibility of residential electricity demand through Machine Learning Barcelona, April 12, 2024. With funding from the Program for Support to Digital Innovation Hubs (PADIH), CITCEA-UPC and Biyiud have embarked on an exciting collaboration to develop an innovative technological layer of Machine Learning aimed at improving the flexibility of residential electricity demand. This alliance combines CITCEA-UPC's research expertise with Biyiud's agility and business focus on sustainability.

The 12-month project is led by CITCEA's Professor Andreas Sumper and Biyiud's CEO Dr. Manuel Villa-Arrieta. Its goal is to enhance the current data analysis system used by the startup to incentivize active response of residential electricity demand in favor of increasing renewable energy consumption. This solution will contribute to energy efficiency and sustainability of the power system.

Biyiud's Proposal: Sustainability through Energy

Through Biyiud's App, residential electricity consumers can earn EcoValor points for following daily recommendations for renewable electricity consumption, which can be redeemed in loyalty programs of sustainable brands. As a result, CO2 emissions from the electrical system are reduced, and these companies gain EcoReputation and new sales.

The concept of the project proposed by Biyiud focuses on using readings from Smart Meters to, through advanced Machine Learning techniques, increase the value of the collected data. This improvement in information allows for personalized electricity consumption recommendations, tailored to each user's specific characteristics, such as consumption habits, use of electrical devices, and management of energy generated by self-consumption systems, including photovoltaic and electric vehicles.

When to start the washing machine to be sustainable

To fully exploit solar and wind energies and reduce CO2 emissions, it is necessary for electricity consumption to be aligned with the presence of these renewable sources. But this exercise, called demand flexibility, is not easy in households because neither the tools nor the appropriate incentives are available to optimize green energy consumption.

The initiative between Biyiud and CITCEA-UPC seeks to solve this problem by involving people simply in the operation of the electrical system. Improving, through an App and without the need to install new devices, households' ability to adjust their electricity consumption in response to the incentive of obtaining EcoValor points that provide access to a community of brands working for sustainability.
